Reviewed September 2026. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the industry label for earning citations and mentions in AI answers — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar. For Google Search specifically, Google’s official stance is clear: this is still SEO, not a separate hack stack.

If you evaluate SEO tools or run organic programs, you will hear “GEO” and “AEO” constantly. Use the label if it helps stakeholders — but measure and execute against real systems. Practical companions: how to appear in Google AI Overviews and how to rank in ChatGPT.
What GEO means in practice
GEO work usually targets one or more of these outcomes:
- Citation — an AI answer links to your URL.
- Brand mention — the model names your company/product without a click.
- Passage reuse — your definition or steps get paraphrased into the answer.
Those are different KPIs from classic blue-link rank. Treat them as a portfolio alongside organic traffic, not a replacement.
Google’s official view: still SEO
Google Search Central’s generative AI optimization guide states that AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems (including retrieval / grounding and query fan-out). From Google’s perspective, optimizing for those features is optimizing for Search — i.e. SEO.
Google also mythbusts common “GEO hacks” for Google Search:
- Special
llms.txt/ AI-only markup files — not used by Google Search. - Forced “chunking” content into tiny AI bites — not required.
- Rewriting only for machines, or chasing inauthentic mentions — ineffective / spam-adjacent.
- Special schema only for AI Overviews — none required (schema still helps rich results generally).

What actually moves visibility
- Non-commodity content — first-hand experience, original data, or a clear expert take (not recycled tip lists).
- Topic coverage for fan-out — answer related sub-questions on the journey without spawning thin scaled pages.
- Technical eligibility — crawlable, indexable, snippet-eligible, internal links, text that is not trapped in images-only.
- Authority & consensus — brand mentions and trust signals off-site still matter for both classic rankings and AI citation odds (industry research; not a Google “hack”).
- Freshness where the topic changes — dated Reviewed lines and updated steps for volatile subjects.

Google vs ChatGPT / Perplexity
GEO often mixes engines. That is fine strategically — but controls differ:
- Google AI Overviews / AI Mode — tied to Search index + quality systems; follow Search Central; measure in Search Console’s generative AI reports when available.
- ChatGPT and similar assistants — more training-data + browsing/partner dependent; quotable pages and off-site consensus matter more than Google-only SERP tricks.
How to measure GEO without vanity
- Search Console generative AI impressions (pages that appear in AI features).
- Spot-checks of target prompts/queries for citations or brand mentions.
- Organic clicks + assisted conversions — AI visibility that never helps business outcomes is theater.
FAQs
Is GEO different from SEO?
For Google Search: no — Google frames it as SEO for generative features. For multi-engine AI answer surfaces, GEO is a useful umbrella for citation/mention goals beyond classic rankings.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Not for Google Search. Google says it does not use those files for Search (including AI features). Other tools may read them; that is optional and separate.
Should agencies sell “GEO packages”?
Sell outcomes (citations, AI-feature impressions, qualified traffic) and methods rooted in quality content + technical SEO + authority. Avoid packages that only ship llms.txt, chunking, or mention spam.
