A brief prevents “pretty but off-intent” drafts. Copy the sections below into Docs/Notion, then fill them before outlining. For writing craft after the brief, see SEO content writing tips and how to optimize content for SEO.
What a strong SEO content brief must include
- Primary query + intent — informational, commercial, transactional, or local.
- Audience & job-to-be-done — who reads this and what decision they make next.
- SERP notes — what top results emphasize (and what they miss).
- Outline — H2/H3 map that answers the query without fluff.
- Proof & examples — data, screenshots, steps, or original experience required.
- Internal / external links — must-link hubs and acceptable citations.
- CTA & success metric — newsletter, product, or next guide — plus how you will judge the URL.

How to fill the brief in 20–30 minutes
- Search the primary query in an incognito window; note result types (guides, tools, videos).
- Skim three strong pages for shared H2 themes and obvious gaps.
- Write your angle in one sentence before the outline.
- List proof you already have (or can create) so the writer is not inventing.
- Pick 2–4 internal links that help the reader next — not a dump of related posts.
Brief QA checklist before drafting
- Intent matches the SERP (not a mismatched sales page for a how-to query).
- Outline answers the query without shoehorned keywords.
- Proof list is realistic for the writer’s access.
- CTA fits the page type (educational pages do not need a hard product pitch).
FAQs
How long should an SEO content brief be?
One page is enough for most posts. Long briefs are fine for money pages; keep them scannable.
Do I need a brief for every article?
Use a brief whenever more than one person touches the draft, or when the URL has commercial risk. Solo writers can still use a shortened version.
Final thoughts
Copy this SEO content brief template, fill intent and outline first, then write. Better briefs cut rewrites and keep pages aligned with what people actually search.
